Bonhoeffer offers penetrating theological, ethical, and spirtual insight in this unfinished, posthumously published book. I feel that this work has more to offer than the Cost of Discipleship (a classic and wonderful book in its own right) and more to offer academically (perhaps not spiritually) than Letters and Papers From Prison.5/5(5). Bonhoeffer is a powerful book. In many ways, Metaxas tells Bonhoeffer's story with such passion and urgency that one could easily mistake the book as a novel. The book begins by sharing about Bonhoeffer s family and his early years. It quickly moves along into Dietrich's youth and early adulthood. As Bonhoeffer comes of age, his native Germany /5().
A short while ago, here on this blog, I posted a few fairly critical comments of Eric Metaxas' bibliography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer (HERE and HERE). My main criticism of Metaxas' work is that it casts Bonhoeffer in an American, conservative, patriotic, evangelical mold. A secondary critique I have is that Metaxas isn't exactly accurate in. Regular supplements to the Green book contains 39 slice-of-life sketches in six chronological sections. Also of interest is a volume.
Green edited a couple of volumes in the Bonhoeffer Works in English series, the definitive translation of Bonhoeffer's works with a rich treasure trove of footnotes and prefaces providing a lot of the scholarship Metaxas relied on to write his book.
